Breast surgery

Breast surgery is a major branch of plastic surgery. Breast augmentation is one of the most common surgical operations in the world. In this area, AFS MEDICAL offers an innovation with MOTIVA breast implants.

Aesthetic breast augmentation with implants

Depending on the individual circumstances (nature of the breast and soft tissue, size and shape of breasts, implant size desired …), it is possible to choose from a variety of surgical procedures available – these differ in the location of the implant and the cutting technique selected.

  • Above the breast (pectoral) muscle (subglandular)
  • Below the breast (pectoral) muscle (submuscular) – this is recommended for slim patients, so that the implant is not visible or palpable. With this method, however, the breast muscle is cut through several times. This can possibly lead to restricted mobility of the arm.
  • Dual plane
  • Incision in the lower breast fold (inframammary) – is the most commonly chosen procedure. The advantages of this method are that the surgeon has a good overview, the preparation is simple and stopping the flow of blood is well possible. The disadvantage is that the scar is visible when lying down.
  • Incision on the nipple – the cut is made either in a semicircular (infraareolar) form or completely around the nipple (periareolar). It can also be extended horizontally through the areola (transareolar). The scar is scarcely visible and a simultaneous areola correction is possible. Nevertheless, there is a risk of damaging the gland tissue and the mammary (milk) ducts. With this method, the insertion of implants is only possible to a limited extent.
  • Incision in the armpit (transaxillar): the cut (about 4 cm in length) in the axilla (armpit) is not subsequently visible from the front. The preparation of the implant pocket, however, is more difficult for the surgeon.

Aesthetic breast augmentation with the body's own fat

Breast augmentation by subcutaneous injection of the body's own fat represents a more gentle alternative to augmentation with silicone implants for, say, reconstructions following breast cancer, asymmetry or in the event of intolerance to implants (capsular fibrosis). Here the augmentation is only performed in steps, since the amount of fat cells that can be inserted is limited. Several interventions are usually required. With the appropriate general circumstances, it is also possible to combine a prior liposuction with this method.

Breast reconstruction with implant (+ the body's own fat)

  • Immediate reconstruction: here the breast is restored with an implant in the same operation, in which the breast tissue is removed
  • Subsequent reconstruction: here the breast is reconstructed in a further operation (usually 3 to 6 months later). An expander is usually used beforehand for the purpose of stretching the skin.
