Colorectal surgery is a branch of visceral surgery dealing with the operative treatment of benign and malignant diseases of the rectum and the colon (large intestine). This field has also witnessed a strong development in the direction of keyhole surgery methods, although open surgery continues to be used. There are numerous centres in Austria specialising in minimal invasive operations.
